Hundreds of books and websites promise to get you out of debt with their astounding money-saving techniques. While some are offering credible advice, others are simply selling a quick-fix approach. "Get out of debt today!" is a common phrase with many financial companies, but can't be trusted.

While professional help is necessary for some people, it is crucial to remember that the main way to get out of debt is self-discipline. And, as we all know, self-discipline isn't something we can find in a book. Self-discipline requires a change in thinking and living, so that you can get out of debt as quickly as possible. Even though it might seem like an insurmountable feat, getting yourself out of debt through self-discipline is a rewarding and informative experience, with lessons that will last a lifetime.

Get Out Of Debt - Credit Card Steps

One of the first steps in getting out of debt is dealing with credit card debt. It's that kind of horrible debt that hangs over you like a black cloud that is most damaging to your debt load, and causes the most stress and worry. When dealing with credit card debt, you need to simplify. One credit card is probably enough to have, depending on your credit allowance. Two is the maximum you should keep, using one only for emergencies.

In order to get out of debt most efficiently, you need to pay off your high-interest credit card bills as soon as possible. This can only be achieved by making more than the minimum payment each month, otherwise, you will only pay the interest that is due each month, rather than depleting the principal. Likewise, you need to carefully examine your use of credit cards and, if possible, stop using them altogether. Paying down your credit card debt won't be noticeable if you are acquiring as many debits as credits each month.

Budget to get out of debt
Unless you can control your spending and stick to a budget, you will never be able to experience the freedom that comes with getting out of debt. While creating a budget might be an easy enough task, the self-discipline that comes with sticking to it that is hard. In order to devise a budget that meets your needs, allows you to live reasonably comfortably and stills puts money toward paying off your debt, you might need to seek the advice of an outside source such as a debt counselor or an accountant.

Use a budget to get out of debt, but don't be discouraged by your money woes. Budgets can get very frustrating if you only focus on the next few years. Therefore, set short-term goals for yourself, such as saving $100 of each pay check you receive. Staying with your budget is a good exercise in debt control, and a sure way to work toward getting out of debt for good.

Save for emergencies
Part of getting out of debt involves saving for emergencies. For example, if you have been putting all of your extra money toward paying off your credit card, you will have saved nothing for a crisis that might come your way. If your car breaks down and the repairs cost a few hundred dollars, you would likely pay with your credit card. However, you then find yourself in the same situation you were in months before, with a large balance on your credit card and high interest rates, making getting out of debt that much harder.

But, a little debt is okay
Being in debt is a stressful and trying experience. Don't beat yourself up for not having thousands of dollars in your RRSPs like your friends have, or for not being able to afford purchasing the cottage you've been dreaming of. Getting out of debt doesn't mean paying off your mortgage before you turn 40. The process of ridding yourself of debt is a matter of determining which debt should be eliminated quickly (credit card debt) and which debt doesn't act as a liability (mortgage). Let's face it-almost everyone has to deal with debt at some point in their lives. It's just a matter of how you choose to handle it that matters.
